Why Americans are Traveling More

There are many positive trends, such as a slight decline in jet fuel prices that factor into this surge in U.S. citizens traveling abroad. The fuel price drop brings down travel costs. Also easing inflation is improving consumers' purchasing power.

Additionally, consumer confidence is up thanks to a strong labor market and it is making Americans more comfortable booking those dream vacations abroad. But there are still risks to watch out for – healthcare costs, supply chain disruptions and a labor shortage that could impact travel decisions.

Americans are also getting smart about travel insurance for their international trips. The studies show Americans are spending over $4 billion on travel protection coverage. The top reason for insured travelers was the fear of flight delays or flight cancellations – a reflection of the importance of protection against logistical risks while traveling.

Future Outlook for Americans Travelling Abroad

The overall increase in passport circulation further highlights Americans' renewed interest in international travel. There are 43 million more valid U.S. passports in circulation than 10 years ago. As of January 2024, U.S. passport holders can visit 123 countries visa-free and 49 countries where they can get a visa on arrival. Overall, the outlook for the travel industry remains optimistic, with sustained strong demand anticipated for the coming months from American travelers.
